Plan Nepal: what we do

Plan’s strategy in Nepal covers 5 core areas, all of which are rooted in child rights:
  • health, water, sanitation and hygiene
  • basic education
  • household economic security
  • child protection
  • child-centered disaster risk management
Plan Nepal works to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality rates through Pregnant Women's Groups by establishing, equipping and staffing birthing centres and training health workers.
We  work  to establish birthing centres in rural health posts and hospitals. Plan also focuses on supporting the construction of community-managed piped water supply systems, enhancing community capacity, managing services and promoting the treatment of drinking water.
We facilitate sanitation campaigns led by children and the community to keep the environment healthy and clean.

Plan Nepal

Plan has been working in Nepal since 1978, helping poor children to access their rights to health, education, economic security and protection.

In the hundreds of communities that we work with, there are difficulties accessing adequate health care and sanitation. The communities are often impoverished, which can leave them vulnerable.

Plan Nepal reclaims children’s rights through programmes and participatory activities that place children at the centre of their own development.

Currently, one of our priorities is supporting early childhood care and development centres to secure young children’s right to a good education. More than 30,000 children are benefiting from the programme.

Plan is also working with local organisations and government agencies to ensure that policies to protect child rights are central in the new constitution.

Plan in Myanmar

Plan started working in Myanmar in 2008 following Cyclone Nargis, which tore through the country’s southern coast killing 140,000 people. Together with local partners, our post-Nargis activities included emergency relief, disaster risk reduction, early childhood care and development, and school construction.

In July 2012 Plan entered into a new, longer-term commitment in Myanmar with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement with the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.

Our initial target areas include the regions/states of Ayeyarwady, Sagaing, Rakhine and Mandalay, although we are investigating the possibility of expanding into other areas including Kayah and Kayin State. Plan Myanmar is primarily implementing programmes in partnership with local organisations and has not yet started any sponsorship activities.

Plan’s programmes in Myanmar will include early childhood care and development; maternal and neonatal health with an emphasis on nutrition; water, sanitation and hygiene; disaster risk management; and child protection. At present Plan is undertaking a sector situation analysis in these areas and also selecting specific townships in which to implement programmes.
