Plan Uganda: what we do

Plan Uganda's work to improve children's lives is focused on 3 core areas, reflecting the life-cycle of a child.
  • A good start in life: early childhood (under 6 years)
  • The next steps: primary school years (6-12 years)
  • Ready for the future - now: adolescence (over 12 years)
The interventions under this country programme are rooted to improving early childhood care and development in the communities where Plan Uganda works.

Emphasis is in improving primary health care - focusing on prompting good hygiene and sanitation practices in homes, communities, support government immunisation programmes, educating communities on better parenting practices including nutrition, education for mothers and facilitating provision of early childhood care and development services including transition of infants to primary plus strengthening community based child protection mechanisms.

Plan Tanzania

Plan has been working in Tanzania since 1991, helping poor children to access their rights to health, education, sanitation, livelihoods and protection.

We operate in 6 areas across Tanzania and work with 30,000 sponsored children, their families and their communities.

Currently, we are focusing on community-led total sanitation (CLTS), which inspires communities to stop open-air defecation because of its negative impact on health. So far we have introduced CLTS in over 60 villages and many of them have declared themselves ‘open defecation free’.

Plan Sudan: what we do

Plan’s programmes have been designed to address the main issues affecting children in Sudan:
  • children’s health
  • water, sanitation and hygiene
  • learning for life
  • sustainable economic security.
We work with children and communities to identify the most pressing health needs, and support them on the management of health interventions – such as immunisation, malaria control and nutrition.

Plan provides basic medical equipment and health training to primary healthcare providers, mothers and community members. From HIV awareness days to malaria action week, we help promote behavioural change through health-focused social events.

We also promote birth registration so that children receive an official identity and access their right to social services, including healthcare.
