Plan’s work in Bolivia covers 5 key areas, all of which are rooted in the rights of the child:

• social governance in favour of children and adolescents
• healthy and happy children and mothers
• learning for life
• improved income and participation
• healthy environments

Children and adolescents have the right to participate in decisions that affect their lives. This programme addresses the issue of exclusion for children and adolescents, as well as women - especially the indigenous.

Our initiatives include enabling these groups to exercise their rights and participate in networks and alliances that promote their agendas.

Plan Tanzania: what we do

Plan Tanzania’s work covers 5 key areas, all of which are rooted in the rights of the child:

• Safe environment for children and youth
• Fair start in Early Childhood Care and development (ECCD)
• Healthy life
• Children and youth voice
• Household economic security (KUJIKIMU)

Plan started working in Tanzania in 1991. We have a presence in 5
regions; Dar Es Salaam, Coast, Ifakara (Morogoro), Geita and Mwanza. In addition, some of our programs are designed to have a national reach through advocacy, media and partnership.

Our longer term Country Goals is, Children and Youth are Empowered, Respected and Responsible.  Under this goal, Plan Country Programs are designed to correspond with the four pillars of the Convention on the Rights of the Child - CRC.

Plan Senegal: what we do

Plan’s work in Senegal covers 4 core areas:

• quality learning for children and youth
• child protection
• a safe and healthy environment
• social and economic leadership for youth and women.

We focus on improving educational facilities by constructing, rehabilitating and equipping classrooms, as well as training teachers, so that children can receive a quality education.

Plan also supports the use of alternative educational systems, such as Koranic and Arabic schools, which are appreciated by families, especially in rural areas. Additionally we strive to increase the success rate of children completing their studies, and increase the enrolment number of children into school each year, at primary school, especially for girls.

Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) is an integral program area for Plan International. From Africa to Asia Ethiopia to Asia, Plan is working to establish early childhood development centers, educate parents, and provide the proper attention for children under 5 years old.

Fifth Birthday and Beyond

Did you know that 6.6 million children under 5 years old will not reach their birthdays this year, dying mostly of preventable diseases? And, 18,000 children die a day – 44 percent of whom die during the newborn period?

The numbers are staggering, and it’s hard to believe that they used to be worse. Since 1990, U.S. foreign assistance programs have helped cut in half the annual number of deaths of children under 5. According to UNICEF, in the last 12 years, 700,000 fewer children died of pneumonia; 600,000 fewer children died of diarrhea; 400,000 fewer children died of measles; 300,000 fewer children died of malaria; and 100,000 fewer children died of AIDS.

Conflict in the CAR Turns Lives of Mothers and Children Upside-Down

Plan International is working to bring relief to refugees in Cameroon.

 

A young refugee mother from the Central African Republic (CAR) is now depending on the support of Plan International USA to get through a time of uncertainty, turmoil, and heartache.

Kadidja, 15, is one of tens of thousands of refugees who fled to Cameroon to escape the bloody violence in CAR. Along with her 2-year-old daughter, Mariama, she trekked for four months to escape the fighting, completing the arduous journey of more than 600 kilometers amid violence, starvation, and a real threat of death.

How you can help get 29 million more children in the classroom

Education can lift communities out of poverty. It helps children reach their full potential, and it can help economies flourish and promote the rights of women and girls. Every girl, boy, woman and man is entitled to an education.

But around the world, 1 in 10 children is denied their right to an education. In fact, 126 million children are currently not in school – 57 million of these children are primary school aged.

Seeing the results: Our work to help mothers and children

Becoming a mom shouldn’t be a game of risk – it should be the happiest day of your life. But for many mothers, pregnancy and childbirth is an undertaking full of danger. In fact, 358,000 women die during pregnancy and childbirth every year.

Plan Canada and other Canadian organizations played an important role in making sure that maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) was a top priority for the Canadian government at the G8 Summit in 2010. As a result, the Muskoka initiative was born. The initiative was formed to address the significant gaps in the health of mothers, newborns and children in developing countries.

In all aspects of Plan’s work, we value children's ability and right to participate in decisions about issues that affect them.

Children represent about a third of the world's population. Providing opportunities for children and young people to articulate their views and access information is integral to Plan's work, including children's involvement with media projects.

Sisters find safe refuge in South Sudan

At a safe space set up for children, two sisters quietly hold one another while other children play around them. Their silence catches Berhe's attention. “Among the children, there were two that really stayed with me,” says Berhe, Plan’s Food Security Expert. “You can see in their faces that what they saw was grave.” 

The two girls were Lina, age 4, and Madiha, age 9*. Lina is clutching her blue bunny rabbit, as Madiha musters up the courage to tell Berhe her story. She saw armed men attacking everything, killing everyone in sight. At their hometown in Bor, just before New Year’s Eve on 28 December, armed men seized the girls’ mum and dad. Later that day, the parents were shot dead at close range. Madiha witnessed the whole event.

Children bear the brunt of climate change

Children will be severely affected by climate change in Eastern and Southern Africa, warns a report released by Plan and Practical Action. The effects of climate conditions are becoming visible by the day, and children are experiencing them the most, the report states. Children bear a disproportionate burden of the consequences of climate change such as an increase in hunger, disease, population displacements and resource-based conflicts. For example, the report says, the time spent to access safe water is increasing.

For 75% of the households in the study it required 30 minutes to get to a water source and for 18% it took between two and three hours. Women (63%) and children under five years (25%) were more affected by water shortages. ‘Sometimes women have to camp overnight near the waterholes until they fill up again, exposing them to a series of risks,’ the report says.

One-on-one with Malala’s father, Ziauddin Yousafzai

As a parent, you make incredible sacrifices for your children. For Ziauddin
Yousafzai, his choices nearly cost him the life of his daughter, Malala Yousafzai.
In October 2012, Malala, a 15 year old schoolgirl from Pakistan, was nearly killed after Taliban gunmen tried to assassinate her on her way to school. She was targeted for her outspoken campaigning for girls’ right to an education. But with her family by her side, Malala made a miraculous recovery. Today, Malala is still fighting for girls’ education, and her father, Ziauddin, couldn’t be prouder.
We had the opportunity to sit down with Ziauddin, 44, on his recent trip to Canada. We wanted to get to know the man who raised Malala.

“There should be no mystery about how our children are learning” - Julia Gillard

A teacher sits with a student as she’s reading a new book. The child is learning new words, and stringing sentences together. In another classroom, students are repeating their times tables and getting their heads around maths puzzles. In schools around the world, children’s minds are developing and teachers are guiding their path. But there is still work to be done in ensuring all children have access to quality education.

In her article for Guardian Australia former Prime Minister Julia Gillard explores the fact there are enormous gaps in our understanding of how well children are learning around the world. “There should be no mystery about how our children are learning,” she writes. The importance of testing shouldn't be underestimated when it comes to providing all children quality education.

Too close for comfort: Living on the edge in Vietnam

Playing shouldn’t be a game of risk for kids, and going to school shouldn’t put children’s lives in danger. Yet, that was a daily reality for one community in Vietnam.

In the mountainous community of Hoang Su Phi, young children make their way to this kindergarten facility every day. The problem is, their outdoor play area rests on the edge of a cliff that’s way too close for comfort.

Grandmothers inspiring change for children

This year’s International Women’s Day on March 8 takes the theme of Inspiring Change. In Couffo, Benin, a group of grandmothers is supporting and advising young mothers to help prevent malnutrition in children under five. “I’m 50 years old, I’ve six children and two grandsons,” says Victorine Mousouko. “My children listen to me and follow my advice, particularly about bringing up their own children. They are happy to leave them with me all the time,” she adds. Victorine lives in Hanionhoué village, in the south-western district of Couffo in Benin. Hanionhoué is among many villages in Benin that have very high rates of malnutrition, particularly among children under five. Victorine is part of a group of grandmothers who support and advise young mothers to prevent and treat malnutrition. They use locally available foods and traditional recipes to prepare meals which are cheap but also nutritious.

Plan International's Big Blue Bags Deliver Hope to Children Affected by Haiyan

“Angel is a special girl,” says her carer Corazon Barrel, as she waits to collect the small girl in a pretty pale blue dress from the Plan-supported daycare session in Guiuan, Eastern Samar.

Today’s session is taking place in a tiny concrete room. Typhoon Haiyan, the largest storm ever to make landfall, destroyed the adjacent daycare center that sits on the coastline. With windows blown out by the sheer force of the storm, the center is filled with debris. All learning materials were destroyed as well.

In the corner of the concrete room sits one of Plan’s “Big Blue Bags,” filled with toys made from indigenous and recycled materials. The resources were made by the teacher, who attended a Plan workshop on indigenous toy-making just last year. Thanks to these toys and learning materials, the sessions are helping to restore a sense of normalcy for children like Angel.

Circle of Hope: children's rights in a world with AIDS

Plan first adopted a policy for children affected by AIDS in 1996. As HIV epidemics continued to expand globally, Plan’s response grew and evolved to reflect lessons learned at the community level, and also the increasing availability of effective medical treatment.

In 2006, Plan adopted a new framework for its response to AIDS called Circle of Hope which applies the practice of child centred community development. Central to this framework is a programme philosophy that starts with the rights of children and addresses these rights in a manner that is both comprehensive and appropriate to the child’s context.
