Stop the Hunger

It’s an unlikely place to find a celebrity television chef in a part of the world where 18 million people don't have enough to eat but when reports came out in June that more than 1.5 million children under the age of five across West Africa were without food, celebrity chef and father Manu Feildel boarded a plane to Niger with Plan International Australia, to learn firsthand about the urgent food and nutrition crisis affecting the area and to find out what Australians could do to help.

Plan Australia

Throughout the last year the focus of each month has been different covering all of Plan International's core areas and campaigns: education, health, water and sanitation, protection, economic security, emergencies, child participation and sexual health, including HIV, Because I am a Girl, Count Every Child and Learn Without Fear.

Over the next six months, until the end of June, the focus will change to specific Plan foundraising countries and what they do.

The focus of June is Plan Australia.

On the road - Megan's Cycle for Girls

Ebola: Taming a killer virus

A dangerous outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in West Africa’s Republic of Guinea is threatening to endanger a vast population. Plan is educating communities to help prevent the outbreak from becoming an epidemic. The Hollywood blockbuster Outbreak (1995) starring Dustin Hoffman imagined the outbreak of ‘Motaba’, an Ebola-like virus. The fictional virus originated in Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo) and spread to a small town in the United States. The film raised various ‘what if’ scenarios that – although highly dramatised and fictional – have basis in reality.

The current Ebola outbreak in Guinea risks spreading to neighbouring countries. If it happens, it could have devastating consequences in the West African country of ten million people, and for neighbouring countries Liberia and Sierra Leone. Communities in the border areas between Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone are particularly vulnerable – Sierra Leone imports many of its goods from Guinea and the Guinea capital, Conakry, is a key trading hub. Læs mere her!

“There should be no mystery about how our children are learning” - Julia Gillard

A teacher sits with a student as she’s reading a new book. The child is learning new words, and stringing sentences together. In another classroom, students are repeating their times tables and getting their heads around maths puzzles. In schools around the world, children’s minds are developing and teachers are guiding their path. But there is still work to be done in ensuring all children have access to quality education.

In her article for Guardian Australia former Prime Minister Julia Gillard explores the fact there are enormous gaps in our understanding of how well children are learning around the world. “There should be no mystery about how our children are learning,” she writes. The importance of testing shouldn't be underestimated when it comes to providing all children quality education.

Why water matters

Krissy Nicholson knows a thing or two about water. To celebrate World Water Day, we ask Plan’s Water and Sanitation Program Manager why water really matters.

I have worked as an aid worker for more than ten years. I often hear the phrase ‘water is life’. But what does it really mean? I still struggle to fathom the reality of this statement. 
At the moment, hundreds of millions of people live without safe water. As a result, lives are lost and people suffer including the 2,000 young children who die every single day. This is just unacceptable! In addition, girls and women walk for hours just to collect a bucket of water, often keeping them out of school. And if they are able to go to school, there is often a lack of safe water facilities at the school so children can’t stay healthy and hydrated, and there is no water to wash their hands after using the bathroom which furthers the risk of disease. Girls face an extra challenge when they get their periods because there’s no place for them to wash, which in turn increases dropout rates and continues the cycle of poverty.

Tackling poverty together

Plan Australia is taking part in a five-year $90 million program to reduce poverty in Africa. The program, running 2011-2016, is a partnership between the Australian Government and ten Australian non-government organisations and their African partners. Throughout 11 African countries, the Australia Africa Community Engagement Scheme (AACES) is working in the areas of food security, maternal and child health, and water and sanitation programs. The work is focusing particularly on women, children and people living with disability.

Plan Spain: paremos la pobreza infantil which means stop child poverty.

Plan Switzerland: les enfants changeront le monde (French) or mit Kindern die Welt verändern (German) which means children change the world or change the world with children.

There are more, either I could not find it or my knowledge of the language's letters was too limited, so if you can translate the one from Hong Kong, Japan or Korea, or if you can find or know the one from Canada, Denmark or Columbia or if you have better translations feel free to comment.

Water, water - but it's not everywhere...

Plan's International Media Officer Jane Labous writes about the importance of World Water Day.

Last time I was in Dakar, Senegal, my apartment only had cold water. When I first arrived, I considered this a hardship, and I’d diligently warm a pan of water on the stove every morning for my shower. Transferring the pan to a bucket, I quickly learnt the local technique of scooping the hot water over myself with a stripy plastic kettle (they’re always stripy, always plastic...). Suddenly hot water was a luxury, not a given, and suddenly that handkerchief-sized splash of hot water felt as good as a power shower.

After a few weeks the water went off altogether, a regular occurrence in Dakar where random water cuts can last for days.

Plan International USA Awarded $1.5M Conrad N. Hilton Foundation Grant

Plan International USA was awarded a $1.5M grant to improve the quality of life of children affected by HIV/AIDS in Mozambique and Kenya. The grant, awarded by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, will fund community-led programs to protect children’s rights and ensure healthy early childhood development.

Leveraging similar grant funding from Plan Finland and Plan Australia, the grant will specifically be
used to:

• Increase resources that address the needs of the youngest children living in communities with high prevalence of HIV/AIDS;
• Integrate early childhood care and development (ECCD) programming into Plan’s other health, education, and HIV/AIDS efforts; and
• Expand Plan’s reach to additional underserved communities.

Hunger for education among displaced Malian students

Oumar, 16, was preparing for exams when insurgents overran his historic town of Timbuktu in Mali. The town was first captured in March by fighters from the Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) who want an independent state in North Mali. And then, weeks later, Islamist extremists seized the town from them.

For five months all schools were closed and Oumar had nothing to do. Many of his classmates and neighbourhood friends joined the Islamic Ansar Dine army but he was not interested.

Forced marriage laws will protect Australian girls

Hundreds of Australian girls at risk of forced marriage would be protected if proposals to make forced marriage illegal are passed into law, says global child rights agency Plan International Australia.

This month a Senate committee recommended that a specific criminal offence for forced marriage should be introduced. People found guilty of forcing others into marriage would face up to seven years' jail.
