Access to Quality basic Education Services ensures equal access to quality education services for all (including girls and the most vulnerable children)” in order to increase school enrolment and primary school completion rates. Plan Guinea

Plan has been working in Guinea since 1989, helping poor children to access their rights to education, health, sanitation and protection.

We help more than 34,000 children in 50 communities across the country.

Currently, Plan Guinea is focusing on reducing the number of pupils dropping out of school and helping youths too old to enroll in school to find work, by providing them with school kits and professional kits to advance them in their chosen career.

Plan International: Information has Become Central to Containing Ebola

CONAKRY, Guinea - Awareness among local population has become central to containing Ebola as the disease continues to spread in parts of West Africa, says Plan International.

Plan said that people must be urgently made aware of public health measures they can take to protect themselves from the lethal virus.

Due to lack of appropriate information, rumors are rife in the affected areas further complicating the response by government and humanitarian agencies.

“We are racing against the deadly virus. Appropriate and timely information can save lives from Ebola,” said Adama Coulibaly, Plan’s Regional Director for West & Central Africa.

Plan International: Guinea Ebola Epidemic Threatening to Become a Regional Crisis

CONAKRY, Guinea – The Ebola epidemic in the Republic of Guinea is threatening to become a regional health crisis endangering a vast population, warns humanitarian organization Plan International.

The region of Forest Guinea, where most of the 59 reported deaths have occurred, is close to the border with Sierra Leone and Liberia. A few suspected cases have already been reported in Sierra Leone.

Ebola: Taming a killer virus

A dangerous outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in West Africa’s Republic of Guinea is threatening to endanger a vast population. Plan is educating communities to help prevent the outbreak from becoming an epidemic. The Hollywood blockbuster Outbreak (1995) starring Dustin Hoffman imagined the outbreak of ‘Motaba’, an Ebola-like virus. The fictional virus originated in Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo) and spread to a small town in the United States. The film raised various ‘what if’ scenarios that – although highly dramatised and fictional – have basis in reality.

The current Ebola outbreak in Guinea risks spreading to neighbouring countries. If it happens, it could have devastating consequences in the West African country of ten million people, and for neighbouring countries Liberia and Sierra Leone. Communities in the border areas between Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone are particularly vulnerable – Sierra Leone imports many of its goods from Guinea and the Guinea capital, Conakry, is a key trading hub. Læs mere her!

Assuring Health Care in Guinea

It used to be that if you fell ill in Pela, a community in southeast Guinea, you would have travel 19 miles to the nearest health center in Yomou.

It hadn’t always been this way. At one time, Pela had its own health center. After it was destroyed by a fire, the villagers had no choice but to make the journey to Yomou to seek medical attention. The situation was especially difficult for pregnant women who needed immediate medical assistance.

Realizing the strain being put on the community, Plan began construction on a new health center for the villagers.

A Diamond in West Africa

Located in West Africa, the Mano River basin encompasses regions of Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Quests to control oil, diamond and gold stores have contributed to the area’s conflict, but there is one Guinean woman determined to bring stability to the region.

Dr. Saran Daraba Kaba, a CEDPA alumna, is the founder and president of the Mano River Women’s Peace Network. In 2000, Dr. Saran led women from all walks of life to participate in the process of bringing peace to the region. The network participated in negotiations, which culminated in peace talks in Ghana in 2003. Because of their efforts, the U.N awarded them with the Prize in the field of Human Rights.
