Plan International Helps Reunite Homeless Teen With Family

A family was brought back together thanks to a Plan-supported Drop-in Center.

 

As a child in Bangladesh, Ashraful knows how fortunate he is to be with his family.

“I have a father who cares for me and a mother who loves me unconditionally,” he said. “I have siblings who hug me when I feel low. I feel protected. I feel happy. But, every child who has lived on the streets is not so lucky. Many of them do not know or remember where their families are.”

Families fear for children's education after earthquake

"Everything started shaking," says seven-year-old Li, one of the children affected by an earthquake that was 6.6 on the Richter scale, which hit north west China early on Monday 22 July.

The quake drove Li and her family from their home in Majiagou, less than a kilometre away from the epicentre in Gansu Province. Li, her younger brother, parents and grandmother are now living in a tent.

Current reports indicate that the earthquake has killed 95 people and injured thousands in this remote and mountainous region. Over 58,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed and more than 332,300 people in Gansu Province have been affected.

Familier flygter fortsat fra Nordmali

Tusindvis af børn og deres familier flygter lige nu fra deres hjem i det nordlige Mali. En skæbne som efter alt at dømme kommer til at ramme endnu flere familier i det nye år.

Malis regering og militær planlægger nemlig en militær intervention for at bekæmpe de ekstreme islamister, der siden april har taget kontrollen over Nordmali. Oprørerne har indført en ekstrem form for Sharia lovgivning, som inkluderer offentlig afstraffelse. Samtidig er der store problemer med at beskytte børnene, idet der rapporteres om vold med døden til følge, seksuelt misbrug og rekruttering af børnesoldater.

Providing all-round support for children with HIV

At 13, the only dream Ganesh has, is to live. His parents and brother all died of AIDS. Of the family of four, he is the only survivor and is HIV positive. Orphaned and left homeless, Ganesh moved in with his grandmother and aunt who themselves are grappling with extreme poverty.

The tragic loss of his family, his own health worries and his current circumstances have taken a huge toll on Ganesh's body and mind. "I hope I will be able to continue my education if my health improves and if I feel strong," he says as World AIDS Day is marked on 1 December.
