Plan China: what we do

Plan China focuses on the following country programmes:

• Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD)
• Child protection
• Disaster risk management

Within the process of implementing these programmes, we will build the capacity of children and their families; strengthen cooperation with civil society and government departments at all levels; provide capacity building for relevant partners; and promote advocacy so as to contribute to the efforts of promoting child rights to end child poverty.

 

The goal of the Early Childhood Care and Development programme is that girls and boys aged 0 to 8 years from disadvantaged communities in China, including those from marginalised groups, will realise their rights to survival, care and healthy Development

 

Plan China develops training systems and models for rural pre-school teachers, disseminates early childhood care and education knowledge among parents, and pilots rural pre-school education management systems.

Plan China

 Plan has been working in China since 1995 helping poor children to access their rights to health, education, livelihoods and protection.

 

Plan China strives to work with children, especially the most marginalised children, their families and their communities, to improve living standards and promote children’s development.

Programmes address children’s rights, early childhood care and development, child protection, community-based child education, child nutrition, child-friendly schools, and child-centred disaster preparedness.

Plan’s major programme areas are located in Shaanxi Province, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and Yunnan Province, where 168,000 children have directly benefited from our programmes.

Playing for a brighter future

Young children who attend preschools and are encouraged to play and sing are more confident and often perform better academically, socially and emotionally than their classmates.

However, in rural China, many parents and caregivers emphasize book learning and do not know of the benefits of early stimulation and development.
Plan China has worked in places like Yuyang district in central China to raise awareness about and develop programmes in early childhood learning.

Relief for families hit by China earthquake

Plan teams are delivering emergency relief to families affected by the earthquake which hit north-west China on Monday.

Over 58,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed and more than 332,300 people have been affected in Gansu Province.

"Everything started shaking," says 7-year-old Li, one of many children who have been forced from their homes and are now living in tents with their families.

Plan deployed an assessment team to the affected zone the day the earthquake hit and is supporting 1,000 of the worst-affected households - including Li’s - with emergency relief kits.

Families fear for children's education after earthquake

"Everything started shaking," says seven-year-old Li, one of the children affected by an earthquake that was 6.6 on the Richter scale, which hit north west China early on Monday 22 July.

The quake drove Li and her family from their home in Majiagou, less than a kilometre away from the epicentre in Gansu Province. Li, her younger brother, parents and grandmother are now living in a tent.

Current reports indicate that the earthquake has killed 95 people and injured thousands in this remote and mountainous region. Over 58,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed and more than 332,300 people in Gansu Province have been affected.

Communities Lose Everything in North West China Earthquake

Although Majiagou villager Zhu's newly-built house collapsed in the 6.6 earthquake that devastated North West China earlier this week, his focus is on the future of his grandchildren, as he says, “One thing I fear most is my grandchildren’s education in the new semester in September."

Seven-year-old Li is just one of the children from that same village who has been affected. "Everything started shaking," she says of the earthquake which began on the morning of July 22nd. The earthquake left Li and her family displaced from their home in Majiagou. Her younger brother, parents, and grandmother are now living in a tent.

Plan Responds to Earthquake Affected Children

It's Thursday, the fifth day after the Ya’an 7.0 magnitude earthquake.

“I want the school to be repaired as soon as possible, so that I can go back to school to learn knowledge,” said Yangyang, a   13-year-old boy who currently shares one tent with ten other people who have been displaced from their homes.

Yangyang’s school, Shangli Township, has been badly damaged by the earthquake. Several of the other schools in Lushan County have also been severely affected.

Plan reaching out to quake-affected children in China

Plan has started its emergency response in China's earthquake-affected Sichuan province.

Scores have died and the death-toll is likely to rise as a 6.6-magnitude earthquake caused widespread destruction in Sichuan’s Lushan County on Saturday. The Chinese government has declared the highest level of state emergency.
