Plan Vietnam: what we do

Plan Vietnam has 8 programme units in the central and northern parts of the country, predominantly in hard-to-reach areas where many of the most marginalised groups live. Plan Vietnam's core areas of activity include:

Plan in Myanmar: what we do

Plan’s work has so far directly benefited over 194,000 people.
Our core activities include:
  • early childhood care and development
  • maternal and neonatal health
  • water, sanitation and hygiene
  • disaster risk management
  • child protection
Plan’s programmes in Myanmar will include early childhood care and development; maternal and neonatal health with an emphasis on nutrition; water, sanitation and hygiene; disaster risk management; and child protection. At present Plan is undertaking a sector situation analysis in these areas and also selecting specific townships in which to implement programmes.

Plan Laos: what we do

Plan’s work in Laos covers 3 core areas, all of which are rooted in the rights of the child:
  • early childhood education and development
  • basic education and child protection
  • water, sanitation, and hygiene
  • health and nutrition
  • building relationships.
Plan works closely with government education services, to support early childhood education, including:
  • helping communities to improve pre-schools
  • training pre-school teachers in stimulating and enjoyable teaching methods
  • provision of books, educational and play materials, desks and equipment
  • curriculum development for a short in-service course for pre-school teachers
  • increasing awareness amongst key decision-makers at national level of the importance of early childhood education.

Plan Indonesia: what we do

Plan’s work in Indonesia covers 5 core areas, all of which are rooted in the rights of the child:
  • child health
  • education and early childhood care and development
  • economic security
  • child protection and participation
  • disaster response and risk reduction
Plan ensures that children have access to good quality health services through revitalisation of community health posts and an effective school health programme. For adolescents, reproductive health, HIV and AIDS are the key focus.

Plan Guatemala: what we do

Plan Guatemala works to help children, families and communities living in poverty through the following core areas:
  • survival and development of children and adolescents
  • healthy lifestyles and HIV prevention
  • water and sanitation, environment and risk management
  • learning for life
  • child and youth participation
  • protection for children and adolescents.
Over the past 3 years, Plan has agreed with the Ministry of Health to expand the coverage of health services to more communities and for it to gradually assume funding in the areas previously covered by Plan.

This year Plan’s focus is on working with communities to monitor and ensure they receive a quality health service – particularly for pregnant women and children under 5 years.

This programme promotes the exercise of children’s and adolescents’ rights so that they can live in a safe, healthy, caring and stimulating environment.

Plan Dominican Republic: what we do

Plan Dominican Republic helps children to realise their rights through the following core programmes:
  • early childhood care and development
  • education
  • child protection
  • community health
  • economic development and microfinance
  • child and youth participation
  • disaster risk reduction.
This includes sustainable strategies to improve child-raising practices for children under 5 through family orientation and community-run day care centres.

These centres prepare children for school using a playful approach. They monitor physical and motor skills and provide early stimulation.

Plan Mali: what we do

Plan’s work in Mali covers 4 core areas, all of which are rooted in the rights of the child:
  • Child survival and maternal health
  • Education and development
  • Child protection and participation
  • Livelihood security
Plan Mali works to reduce child mortality and improve maternal health. Providing health clinics for parents and their children, as well as guidance during pregnancies, has helped improve these rates in Mali.

Communities actively participate in promoting the dangers of child and maternal health during pregnancy. Plan also supports children to take an active role in regular radio broadcasts, to raise awareness of health issues in the community.

From now and a year forward each month will focus on four different developing countries that Plan works in and what we do there. By continent in alphabetical order. Starting in Africa with Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Egypt in November. Then the Americas starting next May and last to Asia in August.

Development education

Young people are a powerful force for change. Through development education we want to help schools, teachers and young people become more informed and aware of our world.
By understanding the issues and opportunities other young people around the world are facing, and seeing the influences and causes behind situations, young people are able to judge for themselves how best to create positive change.

USAID and Partner Organizations Launch U.S. Global Development Lab to End Extreme Poverty

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Dr. Rajiv Shah announced today the establishment of the U.S. Global Development Lab at an event in New York City. The launch event featured a keynote address by former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who has been a strong supporter of the use of science, innovation and partnerships to further U.S development goals. The Lab and its 29 inaugural Cornerstone Partners will advance a science-and technology-based approach to development, creating a new global marketplace of innovations and taking them to scale to help end extreme poverty by 2030.

Potential boost to developing economies through microfinance


The global economy, and particularly developing nations, could receive a yearly savings boost of up to US$157 billion if the 2.7 billion adults worldwide who are ‘unbanked’ participate in savings-led microfinance programmes.
The figure is part of a new report that finds that closer cooperation between banks, NGOs and governments is essential for real progress in financial inclusion.
