Plan Laos: what we do

Plan’s work in Laos covers 3 core areas, all of which are rooted in the rights of the child:
  • early childhood education and development
  • basic education and child protection
  • water, sanitation, and hygiene
  • health and nutrition
  • building relationships.
Plan works closely with government education services, to support early childhood education, including:
  • helping communities to improve pre-schools
  • training pre-school teachers in stimulating and enjoyable teaching methods
  • provision of books, educational and play materials, desks and equipment
  • curriculum development for a short in-service course for pre-school teachers
  • increasing awareness amongst key decision-makers at national level of the importance of early childhood education.

Plan Laos

Plan has been working in Laos since 2007, helping poor children to realise their rights to education, health and a high quality of life.

In the 300 communities that we work with, there are difficulties accessing adequate healthcare, sanitation and basic education. The communities are impoverished, which can leave them vulnerable.

Plan Laos helps children reclaim their rights through programmes and participatory activities that place children at the centre of their own development.

Currently, among our priorities is supporting Early Childhood Care & Development in communities to secure young children’s right to a good education. This is done both through early-learning centres, co-located with primary schools, and community-based parenting groups.

Plan also works with local organisations and government agencies to ensure education policies protect the children’s right to quality education.

A Newfound Interest

Pacia, a 17-year-old member of the H’Mong minority ethnic community in Laos, has not let her parents’ stop her from learning –even if they have made her drop out of school. On the contrary, she has attended several Plan sponsored training sessions for youth radio announcers. Each time she has interviewed a community member with an issue to include in her radio program she has learned something new.

Pacia is a member of a children’s group in the Paktha District that has provided her with the knowledge and technical skills needed to run local radio programs. These radio programs are part of a joint pilot project between Plan and the Provincial Department of Information, Culture, and Tourism.

Plan Funded Dormitories in Laos Improve Student Attendance

Like many children in Laos, 14-year-old Buasao lives far from school. For years she walked for two hours just to attend class in Pha Oudom district, Bokeo province. Her parents, a farming couple of the Lamed ethnic group couldn’t afford to buy her a bicycle, so she had no other choice but to walk to and from school each day.

Because of Pha Oudom’s remote location, there are only 4 secondary schools which serve the district’s 89 villages. The distance between student homes and schools often result in long commutes.

“Many of these children attend class sporadically or dropout completely,” said Mona Girgis, Director of Plan Laos.

Hårdt arbejde der betaler sig: del 1

Plan International arbejder i mere end 58.000 lokalsamfund i 68 lande over hele verden.
