Plan’s work has so far directly benefited over 194,000 people.
Our core activities include:

• early childhood care and development
• maternal and neonatal health
• water, sanitation and hygiene
• disaster risk management
• child protection

Plan’s programmes in Myanmar will include early childhood care and development; maternal and neonatal health with an emphasis on nutrition; water, sanitation and hygiene; disaster risk management; and child protection. At present Plan is undertaking a sector situation analysis in these areas and also selecting specific townships in which to implement programmes.

Plan in Myanmar

Plan started working in Myanmar in 2008 following Cyclone Nargis, which tore through the country’s southern coast killing 140,000 people. Together with local partners, our post-Nargis activities included emergency relief, disaster risk reduction, early childhood care and development, and school construction.

In July 2012 Plan entered into a new, longer-term commitment in Myanmar with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement with the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.

Our initial target areas include the regions/states of Ayeyarwady, Sagaing, Rakhine and Mandalay, although we are investigating the possibility of expanding into other areas including Kayah and Kayin State. Plan Myanmar is primarily implementing programmes in partnership with local organisations and has not yet started any sponsorship activities.

A new source of water and a clean perspective

Ma Khin is 10 years old. She lives in Myanmar with her family. Although Ma Khin loves going to school, it’s not always possible. That’s because she spends many of her days fetching water for her family during the dry season.

It’s a problem for most children like Ma Khin, but an even bigger problem for the communities where Plan works in Myanmar. That’s because for years, open ponds have been the main source of water for these communities.

As you can imagine, the pond water is unsafe. It leads to high levels of infection and disease in Myanmar’s children. And during the dry season, the pond water dries up, forcing children like Ma Khin to collect water miles away, missing out on school.

Relief kits delivered to flood-hit families in Myanmar

Plan is distributing relief kits to 3,375 people in 4 flood-affected villages of Kyaung Gone Township in Myanmar.

Monsoon flooding in August affected 70,000 people along the Ayeyarwady Delta, forcing 467 schools to close.

An assessment conducted by Plan and local partner Swanyee Development Foundation identified a need for non-food items among families who had been unable to evacuate from the villages of Pauk Ngu, Doe Tan, Tet Seik, Laye Kwellaher.

Plan’s relief kits comprise of hygiene items, mosquito nets, blankets, and clothes for children. Although the flood water has now receded in affected areas, muddy conditions are slowing down all community activities and access remains difficult as villages can only be reached by river.
