India floods emergency appeal launched

Plan has launched an emergency appeal for US$1,000,000 to support thousands of families affected by the devastating floods in India’s Uttarakhand state.

According to reports, the death toll is expected to exceed 5,000, with 680 people confirmed dead, while 90,000 have been rescued.

Plan is already providing emergency relief to affected children and adults – including food, first aid kits, blankets and other items.

Flood response in India and Nepal

Plan teams are moving quickly to help communities hit by disastrous monsoon flooding in Nepal and the north of India.

Continuous heavy rainfall in the region over the past few days has triggered flash floods and landslides.

Current estimates put the number of people affected in the Uttarkhand province of India at over 130,000. In Nepal, it is thought that 2,500 families have been forced to leave their homes and many thousands more are affected by flood damage and blocked roads.

Floods Leave a Trail of Destruction in Homabay

An estimated 1,500 people and 2,000 students are in need of emergency support after raging floods hit south west Kenya.

Two months ago, residents of Homabay County could never have predicted that the rainy season, which allows them to plant crops and feed their animals, would cause so much destruction.

However, as the rains intensified, they swelled streams and rivers, creating pounding flood waters that swept away people, animals, crops, and buildings.

Supporting the Needs of Children and Teachers in Mozambique

"I didn't know floods could be like this."

Those are the words of 7-year-old Domingo from Chilembene community describing the floods that have disrupted the start of his school year. The floods have submerged schools, homes, and hospitals in the Chokwe district of Gaza Province.

As the flood-induced humanitarian crisis continues to take its toll on thousands of communities across the country, Plan International has stepped in to support government efforts through the provision of 10,000 learning kits.

Supporting Residents is Crucial to Restoring Livelihoods and Social Infrastructure in Mozambique

Life seems to be returning to normalcy in the flood-hit town of Chókwè. Electricity and water have been restored and the community is cleaning up in the aftermath of the worst floods in 13 years.

Despite these recovery efforts, Chókwè residents are still faced with the reality of dwindling food stocks, disease outbreaks, and the cost of rebuilding destroyed social and economic infrastructure.

Plan Distributes Learning Kits to Flood-Hit Schools in Mozambique

As the flood-induced humanitarian crisis continues to take its toll on thousands of communities in Mozambique, global children’s rights organization Plan International has started distributing learning kits to thousands of displaced school children to enable them to return to school.

Plan has also stepped in to provide emotional and psychological support to hundreds of teachers affected by the floods, which killed about 80 people and affected almost a quarter of a million people in the past few weeks.

Children in Mozambique go back to school after floods

At Nkonne Primary School near the town of Chókwè in Mozambique, books and desks were destroyed by the recent floods which forced the school to close down for two weeks. Children and teachers have now returned and are trying to see what can be salvaged. Plan is helping the school get back to normal by providing 'learners kits' with exercise books and other items the children need.

Widespread flooding has left a trail of destruction in Mozambique. The floods, the heaviest since 2000, have submerged towns in Gaza Province, destroying roads, bridges, schools and hospitals.

Children's lives on hold after flooding in Indonesia

Severe flooding affecting more than 90,000 people in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, left many of them exposed to the cold conditions. Relief supplies are now being distributed. “Our children did not get cold again last night,” said Sukaesih, from Rawabuaya in West Jakarta, who has a six-year-old son.

When the floods struck on Wednesday, Sukaesih and her neighbours sought shelter in a shop building before moving to a nearby camp for people forced from their homes by the flooding.

Plan distributes relief items to flood-hit Jakartans

Severe flooding that has affected more than 90,000 people in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, has left many out in the cold - but with relief supplies now being distributed, residents are feeling a little less chilly.

“Our children did not get cold again last night,” said Sukaesih, 36, mother of a 6-year-old son, from Rawabuaya in West Jakarta.

When the floods struck on Wednesday, Sukaesih and her neighbours sought shelter in a shophouse before moving to a nearby camp for displaced persons.

For the next few days, they went without basic items to keep themselves warm and clean until Sunday when Plan Indonesia delivered blankets and hygiene kits containing items such as soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes and towels.

New Plan project to aid the Dominican Republic after Hurricane Sandy

In the weeks following Hurricane Sandy, the Dominican Republic, most notably the Azura province, has been recovering from significant flood damage. In addition to the flooding, the Public Health department has also reported a significant spike in dengue fever, eye infections, and leptospirosis that can be attributed to poor sanitation. 

On November 14th, Plan received confirmation from the European Commission Humanitarian Aid (ECHO) that a recovery project has been approved that will aid affected families, rehabilitate ECCD centers, and will train Plan staff in disease and abuse detection, community-wide public health promotion, and small-scale mitigation work.

Oversvømmelser i Pakistan

5 millioner børn og familier er lige nu påvirket af de alvorlige oversvømmelser, som ramte Pakistan i september som følge af monsunregnen. Værst ramt er Sindh-, Punjab- og Balochistan-provinserne.

De altødelæggende vandmasser har kostet 370 mennesker livet og såret cirka 1.200 børn og voksne.

91 % af de ramte familier har reduceret antallet af måltider pr. dag, og 300.000 mennesker har brug for ekstra ernæring.

Mere end 3.200 skoler er ødelagte, mens 550 skoler nu bebos af indbyggere, der har været tvunget til at forlade hus og hjem. Dermed går dette års monsunregn ud over hele 500.000 skoleelever.

Flooding in Cameroon may result in child-brides-in-waiting

The North and Far North of Cameroon is currently facing one of the worst flood disasters the area has ever known. Rising flood waters have left an estimated 67,000 people displaced. This flooding has destroyed homes, cattle, crops, and has disrupted entire households.

In the Far North, Plan has been providing displaced families with emergency assistance. But a far more insidious future problem awaits: child marriage.

It takes nearly five hours or over 155 miles to travel from the district capital of Maroua to Kai-Kai, a village close to the Chad border. However, the last 31 miles consists of a dirt road that is half-submerged by the rising flood waters. Families from surrounding villages are camped out inside of a Catholic primary school. Overcrowded, squalid conditions have made worse by continuous rainfall. With the worsening conditions, we are concerned that many girls will soon be in danger of becoming child brides.

35 tons of aid flown to Niger for flood-affected children

Emergency relief supplies have landed in Niger for victims of severe floods, which struck the regions of Tillabéri and Dosso.

The supplies, donated to Plan by Irish Aid in Dublin, include tents, tarpaulins, jerry cans, mosquito nets and blankets. It is part of the continued commitment by the Irish government to the people most in need in crisis-hit Niger.

Niger farmer’s plea: “Please help us, to help ourselves”

Moumouni Hamadou has had a rough year. In fact, the last few years have been the roughest of his 45 years in this remote Nigerien village in Dosso Region.

Since last October, he and his family of eight have survived drinking one cup of porridge per day. That’s all the food they could afford.

In recent years, there has been erratic rainfall leading to poor harvests. They had to dip into their savings to buy grain on the market. When they could finally afford it, the merchants had increased the prices. The regular price of a 220 lbs bag of maize was about $30, but when the lean season started the price doubled.
