Plan Nepal: what we do

Plan’s strategy in Nepal covers 5 core areas, all of which are rooted in child rights:
  • health, water, sanitation and hygiene
  • basic education
  • household economic security
  • child protection
  • child-centered disaster risk management
Plan Nepal works to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality rates through Pregnant Women's Groups by establishing, equipping and staffing birthing centres and training health workers.
We  work  to establish birthing centres in rural health posts and hospitals. Plan also focuses on supporting the construction of community-managed piped water supply systems, enhancing community capacity, managing services and promoting the treatment of drinking water.
We facilitate sanitation campaigns led by children and the community to keep the environment healthy and clean.

Plan Nepal

Plan has been working in Nepal since 1978, helping poor children to access their rights to health, education, economic security and protection.

In the hundreds of communities that we work with, there are difficulties accessing adequate health care and sanitation. The communities are often impoverished, which can leave them vulnerable.

Plan Nepal reclaims children’s rights through programmes and participatory activities that place children at the centre of their own development.

Currently, one of our priorities is supporting early childhood care and development centres to secure young children’s right to a good education. More than 30,000 children are benefiting from the programme.

Plan is also working with local organisations and government agencies to ensure that policies to protect child rights are central in the new constitution.

An adventure to Nepal and memories to last forever

As a podiatrist based in Canmore, Alberta, Dr. Wotton has been caring for people throughout his entire career. As a professional, he’s helped thousands of Canadians back on their feet, but over the last few years, Dr. Wotton began lending his support outside of Canada, too.

He began sponsoring a young girl through Plan Canada named Sujita from Nepal. They exchanged letters and he received updates from Plan, learning how his child sponsorship was impacting Sujita and her community. Not long after, Dr. Wotton planned a trip to visit Sujita in Nepal.

Hjælp slavepigerne i Nepal

Case study: Harvesting rainwater in Nepal

Families from Damgade in Makwanpur, Nepal, used to be afraid of the dry months from February to May, when they were forced to travel long distances each day to access drinking water – but not anymore.
With support, community members formed a user committee to raise funds, manpower and oversee the construction of household water tanks throughout Damgade.

Journeys to school: Nepal

From poverty to slavery, Pramila, 15, from Nepal, has faced extreme challenges in going to school – and she’s seen far too many girls from her community suffer the same fate.
“Because of poverty, I have had many problems in keeping up my education,” says Pramila. “My family couldn’t afford the things you need for school, so my father decided to send me to work as a kamalari.”
A kamalari is a child servant - Pramila agreed to go as her ‘master’ had promised to send her to school. But things did not work out that way. “It was the opposite of what I expected. I was enrolled at school, but couldn’t study,” says Pramila. And things took a turn for the worse when she fell ill. “At one point I had to return home because I caught pneumonia.”

Nepal moves to abolish kamalari slave system

Nepal’s government has taken a huge step towards protecting the nation’s girls by formally announcing the abolition of the harmful kamalari practice.
Plan has welcomed the news and urged the government to follow through and take legal action against those who hire girls as kamalaris (child servants) to work in households in return for money or education.
“This is a significant step in the right direction and it could not come at a better time as the world’s attention is currently locked on the rights of girls in the wake of Malala Day last week,” says Donal Keane, Plan's country director in Nepal.

Flood response in India and Nepal

Plan teams are moving quickly to help communities hit by disastrous monsoon flooding in Nepal and the north of India.
Continuous heavy rainfall in the region over the past few days has triggered flash floods and landslides.
Current estimates put the number of people affected in the Uttarkhand province of India at over 130,000. In Nepal, it is thought that 2,500 families have been forced to leave their homes and many thousands more are affected by flood damage and blocked roads.

Looking to the future in Nepal

Before Plan started working in Makwanpur, Nepal, girls used to marry at 13, suffer poor hygiene and stay at home while the boys went to school - but not any more.

Watch the clip and join Kanchhi Gole, a community leader, as she reflects on how life has changed for girls and everyone in her area over the years.
"In the past, these children never used to take a bath or comb their hair. Now, I enjoy seeing them dancing, singing and having fun," says Kanchhi.
