Plan El Salvador: what we do

Plan’s work in El Salvador covers 6 key areas, all of which are rooted in the rights of the child:

• education
• health
• protection
• participation
• economic empowerment
• emergency response.

Plan El Salvador has 5 work programs, each one based on Children’s Rights, directed to support the country development. The programs are giving special emphasis to strength the capacity and commitment of society with the most vulnerable and excluded ones.

Plan Zambia: what we do

We work in 46 communities, covering 400,000 people.

Plan Malawi: what we do

Plan’s work in Malawi covers 5 key areas, all of which are rooted in the rights of the child.  The approach is based on the Human Rights Based Approach to Development (HRBAD) from which Plan’s Child Centred Community Development (CCCD) approach derives its core principles.

The 5 main areas are:

• Sexual Reproduction and Child Health
• Water, Sanitation & Hygiene
• Quality Basic Education
• Child Protection and Participation
• Youth Participation and Empowerment

Plan Kenya: what we do

Plan Kenya’s work to improve children’s lives covers 7 core areas, all of which are rooted in the rights of the child:

• child survival
• child protection
• education
• child participation
• youth economic empowerment
• HIV and AIDS prevention
• sanitation

Plan works with communities to reduce child mortality by preventing diseases and other conditions, such as malnutrition, that lead to poor child development and premature death.

This programme focuses on fighting violence against children in school, at home and in the community.  As part of our Learn Without Fear campaign to end violence aginst children in schools, we have launched an SMS campaign where children who have been violated can receive help. We are also working with teacher organisations to address the issue of corporal punishment in schools.

Plan Benin: what we do

Plan’s work in Benin covers 3 programmes, all of which are rooted in the rights of the child:

• Governance and child rights
• Youth leadership
• Empowered women for child rights

Plan works to ensure that councils (newly decentralised communes) have signed up to child protection code and increased their investment in the areas of water and sanitation, basic education, and maternal and infant health- including the reduction of mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
Also, Plan thrives to make sure that women’s organisations and their federations have access to relevant information about the functioning of their councils and effectively participate in the council’s public deliberations, putting the interest of girls’ and women on the political agenda of their communes.

Empowerment: Sierra Leone

Because I am a girl…I have the right to be whatever I want to be.

Danica, a young teenager in rural Sierra Leone, has big dreams.

After emerging from a ravaging civil war marked by horrific cases of violence, rape, and human rights violations, development indicators listed Sierra Leone as one of the worst places in the world both socially and economically. Although the country has today achieved relative national stability, violence is still very much a part of life for the majority of girls in Sierra Leone. Teen pregnancy has reached alarming rates among girls in Sierra Leone. Over 40% of young women had their first baby by the age of 18, and 12% gave birth by age 15. Pregnancy is a leading cause for school dropout among girls.

Empowering Youth with Economic Security

Seven years ago, Theresa, a single mother of 2, left her hometown of Kamakue and moved to the capitol, Freetown, in search of a better life. When she arrived, things weren’t as easy as she had hoped. She found it extremely difficult to make ends meet and plan for her children’s future.

“I came to Freetown from Kamakue in the northern part of Sierra Leone 7 years ago. I was not doing anything apart from sometimes doing household chores for my neighbors. Things were so difficult for me and I didn’t have a plan. Then Plan’s Youth Economic Empowerment project started in our area.”

Mat weaving is the key to empowerment

For women in the Tabareybarey refugee camp, making money can be the key to their survival.

Life in a refugee camp is a far cry from life in a village. Refugees from the poorest village would ultimately prefer to return home to life in the camp. A refugee camp is the last resort, a place for shelter when the violence and oppression forces people to leave their homes. Tabareybarey is such a haven for the people leaving northern Mali.

Plan Niger, one of the leading organizations involved in camp management, has initiated several activities to promote income-generating activities for women and adolescent girls in the community.
