Plan Niger: what we do

Plan’s work in Niger covers 4 core areas, all of which are rooted in the rights of the child:

• child survival
• quality education for all children
• protection for all children
• disaster risk reduction

This programme aims to boost child survival rates by improving communities’ access to quality health services, safe drinking water and sanitation facilities.

We work to build capacity at all levels, enabling institutions, health personnel and communities to better manage illness, access quality health services and  safe drinking water, and ensure sustainability of activities.

Plan Niger

Plan has been working in Niger since 1998, helping poor children to access their rights to health, education and protection.

Our programmes benefit at least 20,908 children in 77 communities.

Currently, we are focusing on a school canteen project that gives breakfast and lunch to school children in several Plan-affiliated communities. This not only encourages school attendance, it improves village food security and children’s nutrition.

Case study: 13 and bride

Meet Mariama, 13, who has just discovered she is about to join the 40% of girls in Niger who marry before they are 15.

Early marriage can be catastrophic for girls. Many are pulled out of education and pregnancy can cause serious long-term problems - such as fistula, which leaves girls incontinent and in constant pain.

Plan is working with girls, their parents and communities to educate them about the consequences of child marriage, particularly the dangers to a girl's health if she gives birth before her body is ready.

Mat weaving is the key to empowerment

For women in the Tabareybarey refugee camp, making money can be the key to their survival.

Life in a refugee camp is a far cry from life in a village. Refugees from the poorest village would ultimately prefer to return home to life in the camp. A refugee camp is the last resort, a place for shelter when the violence and oppression forces people to leave their homes. Tabareybarey is such a haven for the people leaving northern Mali.

Plan Niger, one of the leading organizations involved in camp management, has initiated several activities to promote income-generating activities for women and adolescent girls in the community.
