Plan Cameroon: what we do

Plan works with and through children, their families, communities and partners to implement development programs using the Child Centred Community Development ( CCCD) approach. Child participation and protection are the core values underlining all our activities. Plan’s interventions focus in promoting children’s rights in 4 main domains: Education, health, protection and Economic Security.

In Cameroon, low school attendance, low completion rate and the rate of high school dropouts remain a challenge. Unsafe school environment, inappropriate curricula and insufficient learning material lead to poor quality education which affects many children and youths, with a greater impact on girls. In collaboration with all stakeholders, Plan promotes an inclusive, safe, healthy and child-friendly learning environment, to achieve quality education.

Plan Cameroon

Plan has been working in Cameroon since 1996, helping poor children to access their rights to health, education, livelihoods and protection.

We support more than 842 communities in 6 of Cameroon’s 10 regions.

Currently, Plan Cameroon is helping to train AIDS Control Committees as peer educators to transmit useful messages about HIV and sexually transmitted disease prevention within local communities in Okola, Meiganga and Wum health districts based in Central, Eastern and North-Western regions respectively.

Plan International: Thousands of Central African Republic Refugee Children in Dire Need in Cameroon

YAOUNDE - More than 36,000 refugee children from the Central African Republic (CAR) have entered Cameroon and many of them are in dire need of nutrition and health care, says Plan International.

Children, some of whom are unaccompanied, have battled starvation, disease, and attacks on their way to Cameroon as they fled the ongoing brutal violence in the CAR.

“A number of children arriving at the border are on the brink of death with severe malnutrition and medical complications. The humanitarian agencies on the ground are stretched to their capacities as there are hundreds who need urgent attention,” said Famari Barro, Country Director of Plan in Cameroon.

Making Strides Against Malaria in Cameroon

Aissatou Maliki of Cameroon has been a witness to far too much tragedy.

Between 2000 and 2011, eight children from her extended family died as a result of malaria.

"My cousins died in succession,” she said. “We did not know the cause of death. It was only later that we realized, thanks to the advice of the Community Based Organizations (CBOs), that malaria was killing them.”Læs mere her!

Case study: Girls speak out at UN

A delegation of girls from poor rural communities across the world are sharing the harsh reality of their lives at a United Nations meeting in New York.

The 9 Plan-supported teenagers from Cambodia, Cameroon, Malawi, Pakistan and Sierra Leone will tell the Commission on the Status of Women* (CSW), of the daily challenges girls face in their communities – from early and forced marriage to polygamy and domestic violence.

Journeys to school: Cameroon

Thirteen-year-old Yié is the only Baka girl in her secondary school. She is determined that other girls like her should also have the opportunity to continue their education.

Yié comes from Mayos, a community of Baka pygmies in eastern Cameroon. Her school is 8km away – too far to travel each day – so she stays nearby and returns home when she can. But Yié and her mother are willing to do whatever it takes give her the best opportunities for the future.

“I love school and I am proud to go,” says Yié. “I like French and all the subjects really. School is good, but I am the only Baka girl in my school. I am a little bit unusual! I have friends there and I am accepted.

I have lived my whole life in Briqueterie, an extremely poor district in the heart of Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon. 90% of the people living her are Hausas (Muslims) from the northern most part of the country. Tradition is an important part of lives here.
