Improving Sanitation – and Health – in Cambodia

In Cambodia, poverty, a lack of infrastructure, and a long standing practice of open defecation all contribute to poor sanitation. In areas where people go to the bathroom in the open, contact with feces can result in illnesses being easily transmitted through what is known as the four “Fs”: food, fingers, flies, and fields. The most common condition is diarrhea, which still causes more deaths in children under the age of 5 than HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis, combined.

Even when death isn’t an outcome, repeated bouts of diarrhea at a young age can often lead to malnutrition and stunted growth. In addition, when children miss school and adults miss work due to sickness, economic opportunities are often lost.

Case study: Girls speak out at UN

A delegation of girls from poor rural communities across the world are sharing the harsh reality of their lives at a United Nations meeting in New York.

The 9 Plan-supported teenagers from Cambodia, Cameroon, Malawi, Pakistan and Sierra Leone will tell the Commission on the Status of Women* (CSW), of the daily challenges girls face in their communities – from early and forced marriage to polygamy and domestic violence.

Cambodian students set to hit world stage at major disaster summit

Two Plan-supported students will be flying the flag for Cambodia to share their experiences of disasters at the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction* in Geneva, Switzerland, 19-23 May.

Seventeen-year-old Hengmeang and 18-year-old Sophoeurn will be making the trip overseas to share their experiences and opinions - including at the Resilient Future We Want high level side event, which is being organised by the Children in Changing Climate coalition, including Plan International, Save the Children and World Vision.

Education for Girls in Cambodia

Earlier this year UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon made the point that the opportunity to receive an edcuation is more often a right than a reality for "too many women and girls".

Twenty-year-old Len Leng was very nearly one of those who missed out on an education. Had she bowed to her demands of her impoverished parents, her education – like that of most Cambodian girls would have ended after primary school.

Sundhed: Plan giver 500 folkeskoler i Siem Reap provinsen i Cambodja nærende morgenmad.

Deltagelse: i Brasilien får et kvindeligt fodbold program, 200 piger i alderen 10 til 18 år til at deltage i sport. Programmet øger pigernes deltagelse i samfundet og hjælper med at fjerne kønsstereotyper.

Beskyttelse: en frivillig i Den Dominikanske Republik fører en diskussion om børns rettigheder og vold i hjemmet for at uddanne unge om disse vigtige spørgsmål.
