Going to school on an empty stomach

Thirteen-year-old Abit from Zimbabwe is determined to finish her education and become a doctor, but the daily struggle to afford enough to eat is holding her back.

Since her parents died, 13-year-old Abit has lived with her sister Naomi, 18, who works at a local bar. Naomi’s earnings of five dollars per month are barely enough to support herself, let alone her younger sister.

“I always sleep in class and teachers punish me because I often come to school with an empty tummy,” says Abit, who goes to school in Chiredzi, a village in south east Zimbabwe.

Child marriage in conflict

“I wanted to become a doctor, but since we left home in Timbuktu, I don’t think I will be able to go back to school. I hear my family talking about finding me a husband as soon as possible. That’s not what I want.” 

14 year old Aicha, now living in Segou in southern Mali, is worried about her future. Like other girls caught up in conflict and other disasters, she is at increased risk of early marriage. Although the reasons behind child marriage are complex, poverty and fear of poverty often drive families into making this choice for their daughters – and poverty is often a consequence for families during conflict or following disasters. By pushing girls into marriage, parents have one less mouth to feed – and they may receive payment.

10-årige David, er den ældste i en familie på 6 børn, der bor i en område nær Croix-des-Bouquets.

“After the earthquake my school was completely collapsed and I was very worried about my future. No earthquakes can worry me now and besides I have hopes for a bright future.” siger David.

"In 9 years I will finish with my secondary school and I dream of becoming a famous doctor. I want to participate in the reconstruction of my country. That’s the reason why I work so hard at school in order to achieve my goal,” Siger han videre.
