Plan Provides Educational Toolkits to Pre-School Teachers in Sri Lanka

Hemawathie Manike, a pre-school teacher with 13 years of teaching experience, might be forgiven for thinking that she’s seen everything when it comes to Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD). Manike earned her diploma in ECCD at a teacher training center in Sri Lanka’s western Kurunegala district and promptly created the Dimuthu Early Childhood Development Center.

In the beginning, she worked with the most minimal facilities and had only one assistant. Now she registers between 35 and 45 children at her ECCD Center each year. She accepts that her formal training lacks the techniques that are necessary in identifying the different stages of child development, or delayed development in children.

The beginning of great change in Barouéli, Mali

Barouéli is one of the poorest communities in Mali, and Mali itself is among the 10 poorest countries in the world.

With few local schools and low literacy levels in Barouéli, education is one of the community’s top priorities. Thanks to Canadian sponsors, over 50 girls and boys are now enrolled in the community’s first pre-school.

Five hectares of land have been put aside for the construction of a new primary school. Building will begin early next year in time for a new school year.

Plan’s Community-led Action for Children Project Wins Good Practice Award

Plan International and Plan Uganda’s Community-led Action for Children (CLAC) project took home an award at this year’s Commonwealth Education Good Practice Awards. The project was selected as second-runner up among ten finalists from 123 submissions. Plan Uganda’s Edison Nsubuga, Education Specialist, was present to accept the award.

The CLAC project demonstrates that Universal Primary Education can be realized through collaborative partnership between education players at family, community, district, and national levels. The project targets disadvantaged, excluded, and marginalized children from high poverty communities and provides holistic early childhood care and development support to children under eight-years-old.
