Girls call goes to global education summit

Join us as we take action for girls at the ‘Learning for All’ ministerial summit in Washington DC, USA, this week.

Unless the world acts in the next 1,000 days – the deadline of the Millennium Development Goals – tens of millions of children will remain on the margins of government priorities around the world, and girls will suffer most.

The United Nations Special Envoy for Global Education, Gordon Brown, has called the summit to bring together the UN Secretary General, President of the World Bank, heads of UN agencies and key countries with the aim of accelerating progress in delivering quality education for all children.

Millennium Development Goals on the agenda in Liberia

David Cameron became the first British Prime Minister to visit Liberia this week to attend talks on international development targets.

The PM will co-chair a United Nations meeting to discuss what happens after the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) expire in 2012.

He must grasp the “historic opportunity” to take major steps towards ending child poverty, leading charities urged.

Gordon Brown backs Plan's campaign for girls' education

Former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who is now United Nations Special Envoy for Global Education, has backed Plan's campaign for girls' education. Following campaigning by thousands of Plan supporters there have been a series of political commitments and actions announced.

A global campaign was launched after 15-year-old Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai was shot by the Taliban. Plan joined the campaign in support of Malala's stand for girls' education. And our 'Raise your hand' campaign calls for UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to lead action by world leaders to make girls' education a priority. The Malala campaign achieved over two million signatures, doubling the original target. Over 560,000 people have supported our Raise your hand campaign so far.
