Plan Timor-Leste: what we do

Plan's work in Timor-Leste covers 4 core areas, all of which are rooted in the rights of the child:
  • Right to a Healthy Start in Life
  • Right to Access to Education
  • Right to Protection
  • Youth Empowerment for Sustainable Development
In Timor-Leste, children under the age of 6 face huge challenges in their right to life, survival and development. High under-5 mortality rates, malnourishment, as well as diseases such as diarrhoea from inadequate safe water, sanitation and hygiene, all impact on children’s start in life.

Plan Timor-Leste

Plan has been working in Timor-Leste since 2001, helping poor children and youth to access their rights to education, health, livelihoods and protection.

We currently implement projects in Lautem and Aileu districts, and we did extensive work in camps for internally displaced people in the capital, Dili, after the political crisis of 2006.

During our first 10 years of operation in Timor-Leste, our programs have aimed to improve early childhood education, water, sanitation and hygiene services, child protection, youth livelihoods and youth participation.

Timor-Leste’s Teen Mothers Desperate to Return to School

When my family found out that I was pregnant, my uncle, a teacher at my school, asked my parents to take me out of school. If I continued my studies then I would have embarrassed my school,” says 18-year-old Juliana, who became pregnant at the age of 15.

Unmarried, Juliana lives with her parents in a remote part of Aileu district, just south of Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste. Her daugher is now 2 years old, and Juliana is expecting a second child. Her biggest regret? Not finishing school.

“I don’t have the opportunity anymore to develop myself like other young people. I just stay at home and give my time to my children," she says.

View the slideshow to learn about life in the capital Dili and see how Plan is providing training and employment schemes for out-of-work youths.
From supporting young people to run their own businesses to teaching skills on agriculture and food production, Plan's programmes are helping youths to achieve their potential.

Hårdt arbejde der betaler sig: del 3

Plan International arbejder i mere end 58.000 lokalsamfund i 68 lande over hele verden.
