Plan Rwanda

Plan has been operating in Rwanda since January 2007, helping poor children to access their rights to health, quality education and a sustainable future.

Plan currently works with more than 12,000 sponsored children, their families and communities in Gatsibo, Nyaruguru and Bugesera districts.

Plan Works in Rwandan Refugee Camps to Stop Gender-Based Violence

Plan International will have a presence in all Rwandan refugee camps.

 

In an ongoing effort to protect human rights and secure the safety of the world’s most vulnerable people, Plan International announced in May that it would be supporting all of Rwanda’s refugee camps.

Plan will be coordinating its efforts with the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Rwanda genocide: young filmmakers look to the future

Young Rwandan filmmakers are coming together to mark 20 years since the end of the genocide as part of a Plan-supported film competition to promote reconciliation. The competition is among a series of events taking place around the world to commemorate the Rwanda genocide, which saw an estimated 800,000 people massacred in 100 days – leaving two thirds of the population under the age of 25. Three young filmmakers have already been selected out of 40 entrants to go forward to the finals - including Samuel Ishimwe, 22, with his short fiction film Crossing Lines, Yves Montand Niyogambo, 26, with the documentary Invincible, and Philbert Aime Mbabazi, 23, with a short fiction film called Hutsi-Akaliza keza.

Building a brighter future: 20 years after the Rwanda genocide

Twenty years after the Rwanda Genocide, despite all odds the country is on track to becoming one of Africa’s most developed nations. 

In around 100 days from April 7, 1994, at least 800,000 – and as many as one million – Rwandans were brutally and systematically murdered. Most of those killed were ethnic Tutsis. Plan Australia CEO Ian Wishart was there immediately after the slaughter finished. “What I remember most is the silence – the deathly silence. You’d move through village after village and you wouldn’t see a soul,” he commented during an interview with ABC News. “And that was because they’d either been killed, or they’d fled.”

Boys Lead the Crusade Against Gender-Based Violence in Rwanda

“A group of us boys sweep the school compound for 10 minutes every day. People laugh and ridicule us because it is not common for a boy or a man to be seen sweeping as traditionally this role is a preserve of women. But for us we are not swayed – we’re doing it for a cause. We want to send a clear message about gender based violence,” says 15-year-old Emmanuel Wamungu from Ruhuha Complex School in Rwanda. 

Emmanuel is one of many boys and men in Rwanda who are leading a crusade to fight the gender-based violence that has been caused by traditionally held patriarchal beliefs.

A Plumbing Course Changes Beatrice's Life

In 2011, Beatrice was just another statistic. As one of the 29 percent of young women affected by youth unemployment in Rwanda, her dream was not to have a white collar job in the city like many of her peers, but to become a skilled plumber.

“I am an orphan, my father died in 1999, and I remained with my Mother and 4 siblings. We barely survived by growing beans and cassava on a very small piece of land, and working for our neighbors to earn money for food. Neither I, nor my mother, could afford to pay school fees for my younger siblings,” she explains.

A class effort: Sixth grade students fundraise for change

The sixth grade students in Madame Cusma’s class at Milne Valley Middle School are an exceptional bunch. Last year, they raised money to help build a well for a class in Rwanda… we told you, they’re exceptional!

It all started when one of Madame Cusma’s sixth graders, Eva, saw a Gifts of Hope catalogue.

“We were learning about water in class and I found it sad and upsetting that not everyone who needs it has it,” said Eva. “I think water should be a right, not a privilege.”
