Plan Guinea-Bissau: what we do

Plan’s work in Guinea-Bissau covers 4 core areas, all of which are rooted in the rights of the child:

• quality basic education
• mother and child health care
• potable water and sanitation
• children’s role in civil society.

Plan Guinea-Bissau works to increase access to quality basic education for all children, and decrease drop-out and repetition rates.

The returns on investment in basic education are very high and there are knock-on benefits: better health and nutrition, reductions in the spread of HIV and other diseases and also new employment opportunities.

Plan Guinea-Bissau

Plan has been operating in Guinea-Bissau since 1995, helping poor children to access their rights to education, health, sanitation and protection. 

Our programmes benefit more than 21,000 children in 600 communities.

Currently, we are focusing on decreasing school drop-out and repetition rates for children in our programme areas.  This work ranges from providing notebooks for school children to helping communities build 15 public and community schools.

Cycling to Success

In the tiny commmunity of Bricama, 8 miles from the regional capital of Bafata, Guinea-Bissau, 13-year-old Odete Sana wheels her bike out of the thatch hut where she lives and takes it for a short spin.

Typically, she stores it at her father's house on the other side of the highway. She prefers that it be stored at her father's house because it is stronger and if there should there be a fire, she's afraid her bicycle might get burned.

Thanks to the vintage, baby-blue bicycle she was awarded by Plan for outstanding achievement at school, Odete is now part of a tiny, yet growing, minority of girls in the region who can now continue their education into senior high school after completing primary school.

Plan proactively raises awareness on cholera prevention

Seasonal cholera cases continue to be reported in Guinea-Bissau. This is particularly true in the northern and southern regions of the country, where 96% of all cases have been reported. As of the 13th of November, 2,090 total cases have been reported countrywide, resulting in 20 deaths. 

Guinea-Bissau is prone to seasonal cholera outbreaks and children are particularly vulnerable. In preparation for the season, Plan Guinea-Bissau proactively and in partnership with the regional health authorities began to raise awareness on cholera prevention.
