Plan Ghana: what we do

Plan’s work in Ghana covers 3 core areas, all of which are rooted in the rights of the child:

• quality education
• economic security and health
• child protection

This programme focuses on quality basic education with emphasis on improved retention, completion, and performance. Plan Ghana also supports initiatives to improve transition into secondary school, especially through our scholarship programmes. The programme further emphasises inclusive education by targeting the most marginalised/excluded children.  Areas of intervention include promoting gender and disability-friendly school facilities, good governance and supporting the Ghana Education Service to enhance monitoring and supervision.

Plan Ghana

Plan has been working in Ghana since 1992, helping poor children to access their rights to health, education, food security and protection.

Our programmes benefit 28,379 children in 300 communities across the country.

Having completed the construction of 8 irrigation dams in the dry Tumu programme area, Plan Ghana is now focusing on strengthening community-based water management structures to ensure effective use of the dams to enhance livelihoods.  This goes hand in hand with supporting Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLA) which are spreading in the communities; helping villagers to become financially independent.

Through Technology, Rural Ghanaian Students Gain Access to the World

Perched on a lush green hill overlooking a valley of palm trees, the Samsam Odumase M/A Junior High School (JHS) boasts a new, state-of-the-art classroom located within its plaster walls. In a rural community in the Ga West District of Ghana, not far from the capital of Accra, the school just received a new computer lab and library.

New memories and a new school in Ghana

In September of this year, a group of Plan donors took a journey to see Plan’s program work in action. On their trip to Ghana, the group visited the primary school that their generous donations helped to build.

Anna Maria Reiff and Rob Moffat were part of that group. We caught up with them both to talk about their life-changing experiences in Ghana.

Plan’s youth ambassador takes a life-changing trip to Ghana

When 16-year-old Miranda was given the chance to make a difference in her community, she hopped on board! Miranda joined the Plan for Change (P4C) Leadership Community – an interactive way for youth to create change and make the world a better place.

Miranda made it her goal to raise awareness about the rights of women and children around the world at her Ontario high school. It was no easy task, but this eleventh grader was up to the challenge.

After a successful fundraiser, Miranda was one of two winners of the P4C contest and was selected to travel to Ghana with Plan Canada to see our work in action.

On her trip, she had the opportunity to meet several young women and learn what life is like for youth living in Ghana. Below, Miranda has shared some of her unforgettable memories from her trip. Hear more about Miranda’s experience in her own words here!

A youth club leader in her own words

18% of Ghanaians live in extreme poverty, and the region of Volta is one of the poorest in the country. As a result, people living in Volta struggle with low literacy rates, low school enrolment, few economic opportunities, and poor access to health facilities and clean drinking water.

In spite of these hardships, there are a lot of reasons to be optimistic about Volta. It is home to some dynamic young leaders who are working hard to bring about real change.

One of these young leaders is Jenifer, who is the leader of a community-run youth club that meets once a week. The club discusses issues like peer pressure, adolescent development, and the environment.

Girls education camp brings hope for Ghana’s future

A lot of things happen at summer camp. Friendships are made, new skills are developed, and adventures are had. This is as true about a camp here as it is about a camp halfway around the world.

In Ghana this year, Plan organized a camp that did all these things and more. The camp, called “Girls’ Education – Our Hope for the Future” brought together 150 girls from around the country, for 5 days.

During these 5 days, the girls had the chance to learn about subjects they are not typically encouraged to explore, like working with computers and studying math. They also attended workshops about reproductive health, gender, and child rights issues.
